What is Work-Based Learning?
Work-Based Learning is career awareness and exploration, work experience, and/or mentoring at the work site. There are WBL activities support students in developing career awareness, exploring career options, developing appropriate workplace skills, and relating academic skills to real-world applications.
Work-Based Learning Objectives
- Extend the walls of the classroom learning to include the community.
- Provide meaning for students by narrowing the gap between theory and practice.
- Allow for career awareness, exploration and preparation activities that are coordinated with school-based learning activities.
- Career Fairs- Employers representing various industry or career areas are invited to school to discuss various career options. Students have the opportunity to visit different presentations.
- Guest Speakers- a business professional or industry specialist comes into a classroom to present firsthand information about a specific career area
- Job Shadows- a work site experience where a student spends time with an employee observing daily activities and asking questions about the job and industry
